White Basmati Rice and its distinctive fragrance is held in very high esteem in Ayurveda because it is the lightest and most easy to digest of all types of rice and has a calming, grounding effect on the mind and body. While its a simple two-ingredient dish, proper preparation makes all the difference in taste, texture, and enjoyment. Which is good because in Ayurveda basmati rice is considered the queen of grains!
How To Make Fluffy Basmati Rice (yields 2 servings)
- 1 cup Basmati Rice
- 2 cups Hot Water
- Wash the rice by placing it in a bowl with enough cold water to cover it. Swish the rice around with one hand until the water becomes cloudy and then slowly pour the water out, using your hand to keep the rice from falling out of the bowl. Repeat two or three more times, until the water runs mostly clear. Drain.
- In a pot bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the washed rice and cook on a medium heat for about 5 minutes. Test the grain of rice by placing it on your fingertip and pressing your nail into the grain. If the grain is still hard but you are able to brake it easily with your fingers, proceed to the next step. Otherwise cook the rice for few moments more.
- Discard all the excess water.
- Cover the pot with a lid, reduce heat to low and cook for 5 minutes. Do not lift the lid! The steam that is trapped inside the pot is what allows the rice to cook properly.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered and undisturbed, for 10 minutes.
- Uncover the pot and gently fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
Note: Draining the water out of the partially cooked rice takes away substantial amounts of starch which makes this recipe suitable for those concerned with blood sugar levels.
